Mudchooks Send Crookwell To The Dog House
[ April 12, 2008 ]
The long awaited 2008 rugby season has finally begun, giving the Chooks the chance to avenge last year's Grand Final loss and fortunately, the Bungendore side did not disappoint. The first 2nd Division Monaro Competition round saw the Chooks travel to Crookwell to once again take on the Dogs on their troublesome home turf.
Running down wind with the sun at their backs, saw the Mudchooks take an early lead in the game. This was for the most part due to the brilliant broken play performances of Mark Chapman and Daniel Beer who again score three consecutive tries between them. Two late tries by the home side and a speedy reply from dancing Dave McDonald had the Chooks in the lead by 22-10 at half time.
The early stages of the second half saw Bungendore give Crookwell an opportunity back into the game, with a few silly penalties which resulted in only a two point differential. The Chooks valiantly held on in a tit-for-tat battle for the remainder of the game.
With the score-line at 31-29 and no time left on the clock, the Chooks were given a gift penalty in front of the opposition post. Instead of taking the easy finish, Mudchook's captain Shane Botham called for a quick tap that ultimately saw second rower Kim Veness go over the try line for a much celebrated end to a hard fought match and a 36-29 final score-line.
Recognition need also be given to Dan Erwin and John Turner, whose work in the forward pack to provide scoring opportunity and secure defence, saw them awarded coach and players points for their resilient efforts.
The Mudchooks now wish to invite all our supporters and sponsors, including Tymlock, Bungendore Rural Services and Sutton Real Estate to the first home game of the season, to be held this coming Saturday 19 April 2008, at Bungendore (Mick Sherd) Oval at 2.30pm. Please come and support your Chooks for what is sure to be a magnificent season!
