Scratchy Win For Mudchooks
[ May 8, 2008 ]
Round three of the 2nd Division Monaro rugby competition had the Uni-North's Owls visiting Bungendore to take on the Mudchooks for the second home game of the season. The Chooks took the opportunity of a perfect autumn day to thank and entertain its 2008 sponsors in a hospitality tent, which included representatives from major sponsors Tymlock, Bungendore Rural Services and Sutton Real Estate.
The first half was closely contested, but could only be describe as scrappy with an extraordinary number of handling errors by both sides. This made for a frustrating match for both spectators and players alike. An early try to Peter Henderson was quickly reciprocated by the visiting side and a frivolous penalty close to the Chooks try line, saw the Owls up 8 - 7 at half time.
A short break was welcomed by the home side and gave the team the chance to regroup, at which point some momentum was finally gained and cohesion found. The Bungendore forwards seemed to be somewhat outweighed by the old heads of Uni-North's, although stamina and determination aided in the scoring of tries by Josh Stevens, Dan Erwin and celebrating his return to the run-on side, Luke Payten.
Josh cemented his position is this game and earned himself three Player Points for his part in securing the bonus point win with a final score line of 26 - 8. Prop Jason Byron and front row cohort Andrew Turner, were also awarded Player Points for their enduring efforts throughout the match.
This Saturday, the Chooks voyage to Boorowa to tussle once more with the "Goldies". Boorowa are coming off a home ground win against Harden and would be looking for another this week to remain competitive in this season's contest. The Mudchooks welcome as much support as possible to join them in Boorowa to cheer the team on for another win.
