Mudchooks Down Dogs In Blustery Bustle
[ Saturday, 14 June 2008 ]

This week saw the Crookwell Dogs travel to Bungendore to battle the Chooks in the commencement of round two of the Monaro 2nd Division competition.

Cold and windy conditions forced both teams to play a more conservative game, and in the initial stages of the match it was the young Crookwell side that took the opportunities presented, turning over a great deal of loosely rucked ball by the home side. Regardless, an early penalty had the Mudchooks take the first points with a beautifully struck goal by Josh Stevens.

The three points were soon matched by the Dogs, when Bungendore suffered a lapse of discipline and providing a gift penalty goal attempt to the visitors.

Construction of a few good phases gave Luke Payten the opening required to go over for the first try of the match. This was followed by another to Bungendore and one to Crookwell, for a half time score of 15 - 10.

Crookwell gallantly fought to gain the upper hand in the second half, with the hearts of many Bungendore players and supporters pounding and unspoken thoughts that this game could actually slip away from the home side. Some dynamic forward work and slippery back manoeuvring allowed Bryce McMutrie to score a late try and finally secure a 22 - 10 victory for the Chooks.

This week's player points were, Tymlock 3 Points - Andrew Turner; Bungendore Rural CRT 2 Points - Luke Payten; Sutton Real Estate 1 Point - John Turner; and PM & MM Fogarty Player's Player - Andrew Turner.

The Mudchooks travel to Jindabyne this coming weekend to take on the Bushpigs in what will probably be a chilly venue, although sure to be a sizzling encounter. Sponsors and supporters are encouraged to make the journey and cheer on your Chooks.
