Valuable Lessons Learnt In Owls Outing
[ Saturday, 28 June 2008 ]
Any match against the Uni-Norths Owls at ANU should never be entered into lightly, as the old Owls are eternally wise when it comes to rugby tactics. Last weekend the Mudchooks were treated to some painful lessons by the Uni-Norths sages.
In a repeat of the first round encounter, the initial stages of the match were closely contested, with both team's forward packs playing integral roles. In the scrums, Bungendore's massive front row of Haywood Fraser, Jason Byron and Shane Botham, was keenly tested by its closely matched rivals. The line-outs were also evenly matched throughout the game.
At the half way mark it was penalty goals that separated the two teams, with Uni slightly ahead on 6-3.
Ball security on behalf the Chooks was their eventual downfall. Continuous turnover in under committed rucks, allowed the Owls to capitalise time-and-time again and eventually break through a fatigued Mudchook defence. The Chooks did make a slight comeback in the final stages of the match, with Sam Brown awarded his first competition try of the season.
A disallowed Mudchook try on the bell saw the final score at 19-10 and denied the Chooks any competition points for the day out in Canberra.
This week's player points were, Tymlock 3 Points - Luke Payten; Bungendore Rural CRT 2 Points - Shane Botham; Sutton Real Estate 1 Point - Andrew Turner; and PM & MM Fogarty Player's Player - Andrew Turner.
The Mudchooks are at home this weekend (kick off 2.30pm) and take on Boorowa Goldies for their first visit to our fair town this season. Let's hope Bungendore can take the lessons learnt from last weekend to transfer their performance back into a positive finals campaign. We hope to see you at the game!
