Mudchooks Defeat Bushpigs For Fifth Straight
[ Saturday, 21 June 2008 ]
In the past four matches between the Bungendore Mudchooks and Jindabyne Bushpigs, it has been the Chooks who have come out on top. Given this record, the Bushpigs were keen to break the hoodoo and make the most of their hometown advantage. Jindabyne is always a tough venue to play at, especially in the second round during the winter months.
Unseasonal for this time of year, the weather was surprisingly mild for our fair-weather fowls, who capitalised on the early opportunities within the match to open the scoring with a try to Bryce McMurtrie.
Nearing half time, some sloppy play by both sides had the Bushpigs convert a penalty goal from a minor Mudchook infraction, but also opened up the backline play and enable Peter Henderson to swoop on loose ball to score under the posts. The converted try gave the Mudchooks a half-time lead of 12-3.
In the true spirit of the game, the Bushpigs were not giving up without a fight. The home team mounted a vicious counter-attack, which on many occasions throughout the second half had the Chooks valiantly defending there own line. Following a thirty metre Bushpig rolling maul, the Mudchook feathers were undoubtedly ruffled from the relentless onslaught and the defence could not stop the wounded Bushpigs from scoring their first try of the match.
With the score line at 12-10, Bungendore courageously held on in the dying moments of the match to defeat the Bushpigs for the fifth consecutive time in recent years.
This week's player points were, Tymlock 3 Points - Bryce McMurtrie; Bungendore Rural CRT 2 Points - Luke Payten; Sutton Real Estate 1 Point - Sandy Beggs; and PM & MM Fogarty Player's Player - Luke Payten.
The Mudchooks urge all supporters to join them this coming weekend at the ANU rugby fields in Canberra, when the Chooks come up against the Uni-Norths Owls. The Owls have had a great start to the year and are certain contenders for this year's final series, so this week's match is shaping up to be one of the season's best.
