First Home Game, First Win For Chooks
[ Saturday, 23 May 2009 ]
Perhaps it was the perfect rugby weather, or maybe the possibilities that come from the season’s first home game, or even the sweet timbre of the Australian Rugby Choir, but something certainly sparked the Mudchooks into action in the match against the Taralga Tigers last weekend.
Bungendore appeared to dominate from the outset, despite the relentless whistle blowing from the referee following minor technical infringements by the Chook’s forward pack at the breakdown.
The Mudchook errors were slightly recompensed with some magic play by second rower, Dan Carmody, who offloaded to the irreplaceable Woody Fraser and found the Taralga defence wide open to score first points. The visitors were not to be outdone that quickly, and evened up the score to 7-7 just before half-time.
The second half was all the Mudchooks. Lead around the paddock by the stand-in scrumhalf, Will Schmidt, the Chooks minimised the infringements and reverted back to their formidable best. A side line dart by utility player Rod Clarke saw the Chooks back in the lead with a try in the corner. This was superbly struck by Aaron Williams for the conversion points.
A second try to prop Woody Fraser and a successful penalty goal conversion saw the Mudchooks finish the match with a convincing 22-7 victory.
This week’s player points went to, Tymlock 3 Points – Will Schmidt; Bungendore Rural CRT 2 Points – Haywood (Woody) Fraser; The Royal Hotel 1 Point – Aaron Williams; and Botham Fencing Contractor’s “Chicks Pick” – Rod Clarke.
The Mudchooks travel to Crookwell this weekend for what is historically an awesome rugby spectacle. All our supporters and sponsors are invited to come and spur on your Chooks for what is sure to be another magnificent match and are reminded that the next home match is on 13 June against Harden.
