Away Woes Continue For Mudchooks
[ Saturday, 30 May 2009 ]
With a chill in the air that provided a glimpse of what was yet come for our impending winter, the Mudchooks travelled to Crookwell for this year’s first match-up against the currently second placed Dogs. This annual event once again officiated by Super 14 Referee, Brett Bowden.
Running down wind in the first half, Crookwell took control of the match. In what seemed to be somewhat of a spectator sport for the Mudchooks themselves, the Dogs romped in two tries in the first half. It wasn’t until thirty minutes had already elapsed that the Bungendore side finally warmed up and showed that they are contenders to win this competition.
Down 12-0 at half time it was the Chooks turn to use the blustery conditions to their advantage and with the inevitable skill shown by an unfaltering Luke Payten scoring two magnificent tries, the Chooks soon had the deficit to only two points. This was shortly followed by some sloppy handling that enabled the Dogs to capitalise on loose ball and score against the run of play.
The Mudchooks dug deep and continued the pressure throughout the remainder of the match, which led to a further converted try to Peter Payten. Unfortunately the previously missed conversion attempts were the ultimate difference in the match, with final score being 19-17 to the Crookwell team.
This week’s player points went to, Tymlock 3 Points – Luke Payten; Bungendore Rural CRT 2 Points – Eddie Mitford-Burgess; The Royal Hotel 1 Point – James Pryde; and Botham Fencing Contractor’s “Chicks Pick” – Woody Fraser.
There is a competition bye this June long weekend, but the Chooks will return for their next home match on 13 June against the Harden Devils. Everyone is welcome to come and support your local team.
