Tough Start to Mudchooks
[ Saturday, 30 April 2011 ]
The 2011 season has started badly for the Mudchooks, with a 22-12 away loss to Crookwell on 30 April.
The Mudchooks travelled to Crookwell and found themselves playing against a very committed and well drilled side, which played their best game against the Mudchooks for many years.
The Mudchooks were put on the back foot only eight minutes into the game when Gerard Kearns was forced to leave the field with a serious knee injury. Crookwell scored two tries midway through the first half and these were answered by two tries in quick succession to Luke Payten at the end of the half.
The second half was an arm wrestle between the teams with ball possession and territory see-sawing between both sides. The Mudchooks looked set to cross the try line on a number of occasions, but failed to retain possession at the final tackle and this kept letting Crookwell back into the game until midway through the second half Crookwell scored their third try. This was the first time that Crookwell has beaten Bungendore since they won the 2005 season grand final. The Bungendore team struggled because it gave away too many penalties and conceded at least eight possession turnovers at the breakdown.
Best and fairest points were Tymlock 3 points Jason Brodrick, Bungendore Rural Services 2 points Adam Stevens, Royal Hotel 1 point James Pryde. James Pryde also received the Botham Fencing Coach’s award and Adam Stevens was the Chick’s Pick.
The next Mudchooks game is against Yass at Bungendore on 7 May with a 3pm kickoff.
